Prenatal/Postnatal Classes at the Indian Friendship Centre

This program offers community based, holistic and culturally relevant programs aimed at prenatal and postnatal aboriginal mothers, their infants up to the age of 6 months, and their families living off-reserve.

The Aboriginal Prenatal Program can provide you with information and support throughout your pregnancy.

This program will connect you with other programs here at the Indian Friendship Centre or to other agencies and services in the community.

This is a free, voluntary, client driven program provided by Ka:nen Our Children Our Future

 

The off-reserve Aboriginal component of the Canadian Prenatal Nutrition Program offers a range of programs and services, which focus on:

 

¨ Food supplements

¨ Counseling

¨ One on one support

¨ Education

¨ Referral to other services (internally and externally)

¨ Counselling to at risk and high risk pregnant women on issues that can affect the baby

 

The Aboriginal Canadian Prenatal Nutrition Program provides a variety of classes and activities some of which include:

¨ Transportation to and from doctors appointments

¨ Home and hospital visits

¨ Toy lending library

¨ Baby clothes closet

¨ Prenatal and postnatal classes

¨ Labor coaching

¨ Breastfeeding support group

¨ Infant CPR

¨ Cradle board making

¨ Moccasins making

¨ Scrapbook making

¨ Baby shower

¨ Baby photo days

¨ Naming ceremonies

¨ Story telling and legends

¨ Sharing circles

¨ Medicine wheel teachings

¨ Community kitchen

¨ Milk program

¨ Emergency food

¨ Providing of baby formula

¨ Providing of baby diapers

¨ Free breast pads

¨ Many free samples

 

Funding

¨ Managed by an Aboriginal Management Committee

¨ (AMC) including off reserve and aboriginal stakeholders as well as provincial and federal government officials.

¨ Represented on AMC are: the Ontario Federation of Indian Friendship Centres, the Ontario Native Women’s Association, the Métis Nation of Ontario, Health Canada, and the province of Ontario.

¨ Projects are fully funded if: there is a clear set of core program elements which are consistent with CPNP objectives; and have a clear connection between local needs assessments and the program components proposed and carried out.
