Shki Niigi a Biwaad - Youth at Home Program

¨ A youth program for those 10 – 29 years of age with a focus on youth 15 – 24 years of age.

¨ To provide a safe place for building dreams and goals while having access to activities that lead to healthy lifestyles according to the teachings of the Seven Grandfathers.

 

Youth at Home Program – UMAYC

The primary objective of the Urban Multi-purpose Aboriginal Youth Centres Initiative is to create a network of Urban Aboriginal youth centres to support and assist Aboriginal Youth in enhancing their economic, social, and personal development.

 

Youth Generated

We are the Indian Friendship Centre Youth Program named Shkiniigi a Biwaad – Youth at Home.  We are funded through the UMAYC initiative that serves youth aged 10-29 with a focus on 15-24 years.  We have been here at the IFC since the pilot project of 1999.  We have a very active youth membership; we participate in a lot of fun activities all year long.

 

Our goals for the UMAYC project

¨ To provide Aboriginal Youth with a healthy safe environment that promotes sports and recreational activities.

¨ To assist the Aboriginal Youth to strengthen and regain a positive and strong cultural identity.

¨ To actively assist Aboriginal Youth in creating better relationships with their parents, family, and community.

 

Who will benefit from this program…

Project activities will be targeted towards aboriginal youth between the ages 15-24.  Also 10-14 are very welcomed as well as anyone who is interested in our programs.

 

What are the costs…

Project activities for the youth are provided at NO COSTS.  Our facilities are easy to find accessible so all youth feel welcome and comfortable in our environment.

Youth advisory committee, made up of Aboriginal Youth meet on a monthly basis to form new ideas for programming.

 

Youth may participate in:

¨ Recreational activities – gym days, trips, walks, teen dances, and other community events.

¨ Educational support – computer usage and Education corner

¨ Regalia Night – Wednesday 5:00pm – 7pm

¨ Youth Nights – Monday and Wednesday night 7pm -9pm during school year.  During summer 6:30pm -9:30pm
