Services to all community members

Niin Sakaan Literacy gratefully receives funding from the Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities under the Employment Ontario Strategy.  We also receive training and support from the Ontario Native Literacy Coalition.

Niin Sakaan Literacy strives to provide a holistic learning experience that encompasses the spiritual, emotional, physical, mental, and social needs of each individual.

Determine your goals and develop a plan

Tutors will help you develop a training plan to track your progress towards your career or educational path

¨ Academic upgrading

¨ General education Development (GED) preparation testing yearly

¨ Improve your Communication, Numeracy, and Self-Management/Self Direction skills

¨ Improve your employability skills- career choices, software and resources, access to employment related programming

¨ Learn or improve your keyboarding skills; learn Microsoft Word or Excel, Internet and Email

¨ Cultural components to programming

 

Program

¨ Basic literacy skills level 1 through 5

¨ Basic Computer and keyboarding skills including Internet and email

¨ Employability skills – gain knowledge and skills within a career track such as Construction

¨ General Education Development Preparation with testing offered yearly

¨ Academic upgrading or refreshing prior to returning to school or awaiting a UAAHS seat

¨ Childcare and transportation assistance may be available

New and returning students are encouraged to stop by any time during business hours to enroll, all year long.

All services are free of charge

Our program is available to those 16 years of age or over requiring a flexible and adaptable learning program for each person’s unique learning style.

Family Literacy Tips from A to Z

 

Ask your child questions about the story you’re reading to ensure comprehension

Book family time to read with your children every day.

Create a special reading place in your home, with your child’s favourite books within reach.

Donate funds to the literacy cause!

Encourage children to read words on TV.  Street signs. Mugs and T-shirts.

Find new stories to read with your children every week.  Vary their length and subject matter.

Give your time to read aloud to a child.

Have a child read a book to you.

International Literacy Day is held on September 8 every year.  Celebrate the day by picking up a book and reading to a child.

January 27 is Family Literacy Day (FLD)! Visit www.abc-canada.org for events across Canada.

Keep tens reading.  Give them books and magazines about things that interest them – music, movies, TV and computers.

Let children count our the change when making a purchase.  Reinforce the importance of math in everyday life!

Make every day a learning day.  Ask your children to make a shopping list help them make a calendar of their activities.

Newborns benefit from reading too!

Organize a children’s book club with friends in your neighborhood.

Pick one night a week to make a regular visit to the library.

Quiet, cozy reading spaces are good places for your child to read independently.

Remember that children learn by example – if you recognize the importance of reading, your children will too!

Start early! It’s never too early to read to your children.

Treat a child to a story a day.

Use reading time to create a special bond with a child.

Volunteer your time. Family literacy groups in your community could use your help.

Write a letter.

X-excise your mind! Reading ability is like a muscle.  So – “use it or lose it”!

You are the key to improving a child’s reading ability by placing a high priority on reading in your home.

Zap off the TV- pick up a book instead!
